---- 6/1/2010 ----  Harvest Picks Up Speed Across the State

As harvest is set to conclude in south Texas next week, reports indicate that combines are gearing up throughout the Blacklands region and across the Rolling Plains. Elevators in Waco, Waxahachie, Fort Worth, Abilene, Wichita Falls and Vernon all began receiving grain last week and most expect harvest in their region to be at full speed within the next five to seven days.

The good news lies in the quality factors. All locations reported high test weights ranging from 60 to 64 pounds per bushel, low moisture with almost all samples coming in below 12 percent and protein ranging from 12 to 13.5 percent. As is common with Texas wheat production, yields were highly variable, even within each growing region, and ranged from 20 to 80 bushels per acre.

---- 4/26/2010 ----  Texas Wheat Harvest Begins

Wheat harvest in south Texas officially began Monday, April 26.  Harvest in the region has been late this year due to delayed planting of some fields and cool, wet growing conditions. The first loads of the year were received by ADM Corpus Christi and so far the quality characteristics have been good.

The average test weight for the first loads was 58.2 pounds per bushel and protein averaged 11.2 percent. Harvest will continue in the region and combines will begin running around San Antonio, Texas, in two weeks.

---- 6/19/2009 ----

Harvest moved into the High Plains this week and producers south of Amarillo began cutting wheat, but continued rain should slow harvest in the area. Yields have ranged between 10 and 15 bushels per acre, and test weights have averaged at 58 pounds per bushel. The harvest is expected to keep moving northward and reach areas north of Amarillo next week.
Meanwhile, harvest in the northern Blacklands region, north of Dallas, has wrapped up with even lower test weights than last week, averaging 53-54 pounds per bushel, and low yields ranging from 15-20 bushels per acre.
Across the Rolling Plains, the region spanning from Dallas to Amarillo, harvest continued and most harvesting crews have finished and left the area. Fields that haven’t been harvested are being overcome with weeds, making harvest more difficult. Test weights have been good in the region, but once again producers have been plagued with lower-than-average yields and rain delays.

---- 6/11/2009 ----

Harvest has continued moving across the state and producers in the Southern Panhandle, near Lubbock, will begin cutting soon. Yields in the area are expected to be low due to continued drought and late-spring freeze damage.
Meanwhile, producers near Waco have completed harvest with yields in the low-to-mid thirties.
Harvest in the northern region of the Blacklands, north of Dallas, is approximately 50 percent complete, with varied yields and low test weights. Although harvest was making headway in the region, severe storms will slow progress this week.
Producers across the Rolling Plains region, near Wichita Falls, are wrapping up harvest with test weights between 58-59, but yields are very disappointing, with some fields yielding only 8-10 bushels per acre.
Producers in the Northern Panhandle, north of Amarillo, are expected to begin harvest in 7-10 days.

---- 6/3/2009 ----
The Texas harvest is progressing quickly this week. Harvest in the southern edge of the Blacklands (Waco) is nearing completion with good quality characteristics and yields in the low-to-mid thirties. Test weights in the area have ranged from 57-59 pounds per bushel and moisture has averaged 11 percent.
Further north in the Blacklands region, near Dallas, harvest has begun with highly variable yields and quality characteristics. Areas north of Dallas have experienced low test weights ranging between 45 and 58 pounds per bushel. Yields have been extremely unpredictable, even within fields, ranging between zero and 55. Some producers estimate the average yield in the region will be 15 bushels per acre.
This week has also brought activity in the Rolling Plains region, although a vast majority of the wheat was either zeroed out or cut for hay. Harvest is currently 50 percent complete in the eastern portion of the region. Yields in the area have been low, ranging from 10-15 bushels per acre, with good test weights and moisture levels. Harvest has also begun in the western edge of the Rolling Plains where yields are expected to be slightly higher.
Harvest is expected in the High Plains in approximately two weeks.

---- 5/28/2009 ----

Over the past week, combines have been seen running across a large portion of the state. Harvest, which usually begins in the South and works its way North across Texas, has become unpredictable with elevators taking in grain across the Blacklands, Rolling Plains and Southern High Plains regions. Harvest kicked off in the southern edge of the Blacklands early in the week, but was temporarily delayed due to rainfall in the region.
Meanwhile, harvest in Abilene should be wrapping up next week with wheat showing good quality characteristics. Test weights in the area have averaged between 58 and 60 pounds per bushel, with 13.9 percent protein and 11 percent moisture.
Some wheat-growing areas south of Dallas have seen lower test weights, with the majority being less than 60 pounds per bushel in Hillsboro, whereas other areas in the region are reporting test weights above 60. A wide variety of yields are also being reported due to unpredictable freeze damage. Some areas are reporting yields as low as 10 bushel per acre, whereas other irrigated fields are yielding 30-40 bushels per acre.
In summary, a large portion of the state has begun running combines, but harvest is still progressing slowly with just four percent of the Hard Red Winter wheat harvested at this time, according to USDA.

---- 5/20/2009 ----

Harvest in the southern edge of the Blacklands is still estimated to be a week away. Areas south of Waco received rainfall throughout the weekend slightly delaying harvest in the region and low yields are expected.

---- 5/15/2009 ----

Harvest in the southern part of Texas began April 9, 2009, and wrapped up approximately one month later.   Yields were disappointing, with the average between 15 to 20 bushels per acre, but quality characteristics were good.   Test weights were between 60 and 61 pounds per bushel and protein averaged 14.5 percent.   Combines will begin running in one to two weeks near Waco, the southern edge of the Blacklands, which will begin harvest in the major wheat producing area of the state.
